Purpose of Organization

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, MD, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that was formed under the laws of the State of Maryland on October 29, 1982, for the purpose of building houses for qualified low-income families in need of simple, decent and affordable housing.

Family Selection Process

Partner families are selected for Habitat homeownership based on the following criteria:
Need: Applicants have a demonstrated need for simple, decent and affordable housing.
Ability to pay: Applicants meet financial guidelines and income criteria determined by HUD guidelines for “very-low income.”
Willingness to partner: Applicants agree to partner with Habitat and contribute “sweat equity” hours towards the construction of their home and through attendance at homeownership preparation workshops.
Other criteria include the following: Applicants must be living or working in Montgomery County, MD for 12 consecutive months prior to application.
Applicants must be legal, permanent residents of the United States or US citizens.
Adults must pass a criminal background check.
