History and Mission

Who We Are

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County (HFH-MC) was established as a private, ecumenical Christian nonprofit, organization in 1982 by a small group of dedicated volunteers looking to create homeownership opportunities for families with limited income. Their goal was to build sustainable housing and revitalize neighborhoods in Montgomery County.

Four years and hundreds of volunteers later, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County completed its first home on Chandlee Mill Road in Sandy Spring. Since that time, HFH-MC has built or rehabilitated more than 55 homes in partnership with local families and now has a professional staff of 13 which is supplemented by AmeriCorps/VISTA members.

How It Works

HFH-MC’s homes are built or rehabilitated by a largely volunteer workforce and then sold to qualified families at no-profit and financed with affordable, no interest mortgages. The families’ monthly mortgage payments are paid directly to HFH-MC and go into a revolving fund which helps to build even more Habitat homes. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest on average 200-500 hours of their own labor - “sweat equity” - into building their homes.

What We Do

Our program provides affordable homeownership opportunities for low-income families through the construction or rehabilitation of homes. At HFH-MC, we are not only committed to meeting the housing need of our community; we are also committed to providing residents with a full range of supportive services to help them maintain their homes, mortgages and families!

In addition to working on their homes through our sweat equity program, families also attend workshops on finance and budgeting and basic home maintenance and repair. By participating in our program, partner families are able to succeed in purchasing an affordable home and acquire necessary skills to help with their long-term success. Families also gain economic stability, safety, and a foundation upon which to build a brighter future for themselves and their children.

Who We Serve

HFH-MC addresses the critical need for affordable housing by providing homeownership opportunities for Montgomery County families in need. We serve families whose income is 30%-80% of the current median income, as defined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for Montgomery County.
