About Habitat for Humanity’s Tithe Program
The word “tithe” comes from the tradition in which people of certain faiths would donate ten percent of their income to their religious institution. Through Habitat’s tithe program, Habitat partners are encouraged to donate a tenth of what they raise in support of house building in another country, encouraging all programs to participate in the international effort to eliminate global poverty by sending a portion of what is raised in their home country elsewhere.
HFH-MC Tithes 10% of all unrestricted donations to Habitat for Humanity Braga (Portugal). In turn Habitat Braga tithes 10% of its unrestricted donations to Habitat for Humanity Mozambique.
About Habitat for Humanity Braga
One of the first countries to join what became the European Union, Portugal has become a diversified and increasingly service-based economy during the past two decades. Still, housing remains a major concern of poor Portuguese families, with 65 percent of them living in dilapidated housing and 8.5 percent in shacks. Poverty housing in Portugal is spread throughout the country, with two distinctive kinds of housing, typified in the interior by houses with a small orchard that hides substandard housing conditions and in the big cities by shacks.
Volunteers formed Habitat for Humanity Braga in 1996. The first home was built in Vieira do Minho in 1999. The following year, HFH Braga started to build 12 homes in the town of Palmeira and completed another for a family in Cunha.
As affordable land is hard to come by in 2002, HFH Braga began renovating existing houses using traditional Portuguese materials: bricks, red roof tiles, green shutters on the windows, and ceramic tiles inside the houses. Homes are between 66-108 square meters and mortgage repayments are an average of US$120 monthly over 25 years.
Your Donation Goes a Long Way to Help Internationally
To date HFH-MC has tithed almost $170,000 to international Habitat Affiliates. This money has helped to build more than 70 Habitat homes internationally. For every Habitat home we build or rehab in Montgomery County, we are able to fund the building or rehabilitation of 1 and a half homes internationally.
