R. Glynn Mays Volunteer Recognition Award

R. Glynn Mays was a founding member of Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County Maryland, Inc. and our first Executive Director who served in that capacity for almost 15 years. Glynn was always a volunteer; never paid nor a Board member. Glynn personally supervised and participated in building 9 Habitat homes. Without Glynn, Habitat in Montgomery County would not be in existence today. In recognition of his service, The R. Glynn Mays Volunteer Recognition Award was created. In the spirit of Glynn, this award honors an affiliate volunteer (selected by the Habitat staff) for their dedication, leadership, and service to the mission of HFH-MC.

The 2011 R. Glynn Mays Award is presented to:

Isha Fadlu-Deen

Isha came to ReStore two years ago as an Arbor Education and Training volunteer.  She took interest in all the administrative workings of ReStore and always asked to learn more.  She worked closely with the staff learning to use new programs, helping on the register and leading volunteers.   After a month it was clear that Isha needed a more challenging experience and she was made volunteer donations coordinator, which is one of the most essential positions at ReStore.  With Isha’s confidence, professionalism and intricate understanding of the entire ReStore system, she fell right into place and became practically one of the staff.

We knew it wouldn’t be long before Isha got a full-time job.  This is usually the part where we say goodbye to our trusted volunteers and wish them well, but not with Isha!  With a full time job, three young boys and an active social life, Isha still made ReStore a priority.
For over a year now, Isha has been volunteering on Saturdays from 11am – 5pm.  Isha has an amazing rapport with the regular customers and her contagious up-beat attitude brings first timers back.

Isha surpasses our expectations of a volunteer and shows us all what dedication means.  She is the definition of a giver and we are thrilled to honor her this year.

Harry Semmes Outstanding Service Award

Harry Semmes has been an invaluable board member since 1999 and as Chair of the Site Selection Committee he was key in securing the Linganore Woods building site. Harry’s work on the board has also included major fundraising efforts, but despite his record of exemplarily service, Harry remains modest. Fellow volunteer Flo Hunt has been quoted saying, “I don’t think he ever does a thing with the thought of taking credit for himself. I think he does things because he generally feels in his heart it is the right thing to do”.

HfH-MC has recognized Harry’s immense contributions by granting him Board Member Emeritus status; the first in our 25 year history. In addition, The Harry Semmes Outstanding Service Award was created to honor Harry’s legacy and annually recognizes a member of the Board of Directors (selected by their peers) for exceptional service and leadership to HFH-MC.

The 2011 Harry Semmes Award is presented to:

Henry C. Clarke, Jr.

Since 2009, Henry has provided pro bono legal services to our homebuyers by conducting settlement for homes renovated and sold as part of the Neighborhood      Revitalization Program.  He also assists HFH-MC with purchasing properties and always delivers a clear title and smooth closing.  It only seemed natural for Henry to join the Board of Directors in 2010 and it is no surprise that his peers selected him to receive the 2011 Harry & Lutie Semmes Outstanding Service Award.

Henry’s contribution cannot be measured in simple terms.  His care with the settlement process and sensitivity to HFH-MC’s buyers is an invaluable contribution.  Henry takes time to ensure that all buyers fully understand the complicated settlement documents when purchasing a home and also offers to work with each family on estate planning to further secure their investment.  He is an ace in the hole when navigating new legal territories related to our primary business of homeownership and many staff think of Henry as a “secret weapon” when faced with difficult legal or moral decisions.  HFH-MC is lucky Henry is only a phone call or email away.

Henry is a true champion for HFH-MC and the homeownership process.  The work we do would not be possible without his contributions.  Henry offers his services willingly and always with a sly smile - like a good Midwesterner should.
