Volunteer Perspective

From Ericc, a regular Habitat volunteer and crew leader:

Really want to know why I am interested in the ReStore?
* It has a cool name
* Involves recycling
* You can find GREAT things there!
* It just makes sense
* It is another part of HFH-MC

Something about Habitat for Humanity is tied to the core and total essence of my heart and being. People wonder why I volunteer so much and seem to spend a lot of time with Habitat. There are too many reasons to list, but it really comes down to happiness. I love being happy. Habitat makes me happy. Habitat makes others happy. I am happy when working with Habitat and volunteers. Habitat has a vibe that is just too good to ignore.

From Loretta:

Greetings!

You may not know me, but I have seen how your gift to Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Maryland, Inc. (HFH-MC) has changed lives. My name is Loretta and as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity International in South Korea and Guatemala, and right here in your backyard with HFH-MC, I know how much your support means to our families.

Right now, I'm working on HFH-MC's Family Selection Committee to help find qualified, low-income families in Montgomery County to purchase simple, decent, and affordable homes. This is a task I take very seriously, as the process is not for the faint of heart.

The chosen families must complete extensive documentation, attend homeownership meetings and classes to prepare them for their new responsibility, and complete their 'sweat equity' service hours. It is not an easy process when transportation is not readily available and childcare might be problematic. These are people who are determined to make a better life for their family and just need a little help getting started.

What keeps me going, as a volunteer, is seeing the fortitude of these families to make a better life for themselves and their children. My support and your helping hand both represent a direct investment in the safety and security of these families.

Every time I attend a Home Dedication Ceremony I am reminded why I do this work. The look in the eyes of the adults when they get their house keys, and the joy on the faces of the children when they see their new home, never lose their impact. The fact that these houses have made such a tremendous difference in our partner families' lives brings me, and all the wonderful volunteers with whom I work, back to HFH-MC to help more families.

It's people like you and me who help keep the process going. Your gift to HFH-MC has the power to make the dreams of six deserving families come true. Please click here to make a donation today!

Warmly,

Loretta
